Artist Statement

I was obsessed with fictitious sci-fi books and movies growing up. Microscopic, mythological beings and places fascinated me as I explored worlds that delved into fantastical, dystopian, and never-before-seen imagery. These extraordinary settings still fire my imagination.

My work continues to reflect these abstract images and fantasies as I create sculptural work using industrial materials, bright colors, motion control, and re-engineered modern forms.

Bio

Greg Schaefer, a self-taught artist who lives and works in San Diego California, was born In Rochester New York. He spent his childhood in Silver Spring, Maryland, reading encyclopedias, collecting rocks, and studying relief maps.

He was particularly excited by the electron microscope images his father, a photographer at the National Institutes of Health, would bring home.
These influences on his early childhood have become an important source of inspiration for his artwork today.
